Book Review: Catcher in the Rye

I was anxious to read the Catcher in the Rye before I opened the front cover or knew a single thing about it because it was recommended to me by a friend whom I admire & respect. 99% of the books I read are by recommendation, It means more to me knowing that it has meant so much to someone else.

However, I also love it because as I picture what the main character is like I can see my brother Robby, just like the main character, Holden Caulfield. To help you understand the book you have to know Holden. He is roughly 16 with a chip on his shoulder; he is harsh, brazen and rebellious. The author, J.D. Salinger does a fantastic job of presenting Holden’s personality by his terrible grammar, blunt opinions and negative perspectives of the world. I’ve heard from several people that they didn’t like Holden; they thought he was a spoiled brat who took the world for granted. This may seem true but if you look closer at Holden you can see his desire for a happier more innocent life.

Holden talks about some astonishingly harsh truths & down right tasteless comments; he doesn’t have respect for social standards, expectations or formalities. Just like my brother did at that age, and most of us have stages or moments where we want to tell societies standards to shove it!

But you see the magic of Holden’s personality isn’t in what the author makes obvious, they are simple truths innate to who he is. He uses terrible language throughout the entire book but while visiting his little sisters school gets upset that someone wrote the F-word on the walls for little children to see.

He finds himself in a hotel room with a prostitute but can’t go through with it. “The thing is, most of the time when you're coming pretty close to doing it with a girl, she keeps telling you to stop. The trouble with me is, I stop. Most guys don't. I can't help it. You never really know whether they want you to stop or whether they're just scared as hell, or whether they're just telling you to stop so that if you do go through with it, the blame'll be on you, not them. Anyway, I keep stopping. The trouble is, I get to feeling sorry for them." – Chapter 13

Where Holden’s true saving grace comes from is also where the book gets its name. It’s based of a poem by Robert Burns titled Comin Thro’ The Rye from the research I’ve done about the book & this poem Holden misinterpreted it, but his intention is all the same. “I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all.  Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me.  And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff.  What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them.  That's all I do all day.  I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all.  I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be."  ~J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye, Chapter 22

If Holden could do anything all day, he would be the catcher in the rye, what does that mean though? Most believe what this means is that he would stop children from running off a cliff into the realities of the world and adulthood. Holden also learns that it isn’t good to prevent children from growing up.

This isn't a read for all, but to anyone who will give it a shot, I highly recommend giving it a read.

Firstly, thank you Heather, for allowing me to be a contributor to your blog.  To the reader, I want you to know that I have travelled.  Some of the places I have travelled are Quebec and the maritime provinces of Canada, England, Bermuda, and all over the United States.  Due to familial constraints (willingly entered into by me), I now rarely travel physically.  Mentally and spiritually, I am still travelling through the world of ideas, and I want to tell you about a journey I just finished.

It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition. And, it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. On my most recent journey I hired a guide.  His name is Tom.  He lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland.  But there is one unusual thing about Tom; he is a time traveler.  This isn't the first time that I have hired Tom to take me on a journey.  On my previous journey with Tom he showed me some pretty amazing things, but nothing had prepared me for this trip into the past.  The last journey was a journey where I experienced many wonderful and happy things.  Tom showed me how capitalism saved America.

This time, Tom has shown me a scene altogether scary and sometimes gruesome.  On this trip Tom has taken me from Illinois circa 1840, to New England at the end of 1814, to South Carolina in April 1861, and to various physical points in time and space in the United States and the deep south.

The main point of this trip was to visit with... to really get to know that mythic figure of history, Abraham Lincoln.  Having been keenly interested in history my whole life, I was eager to learn more about Father Abraham, the Great Emancipator, and preserver of the Union.  What really drove Abraham Lincoln to enter into politics in the first place?  Tom has visited with Father Abraham, his friends, and lots and lots of Lincoln's friends and protégés, and with his detractors, where they could be found, in an attempt to introduce him as a real man. 

 

Tom introduces me to Lincoln as a young trial lawyer first, filled with a frothy political ambition.  Young Abe, infatuated with Henry Clay and his "American System," seemingly had one motive: to become a wealthy merchant, a peddler man, a peddler of political favors and influence through the consolidation of power, implemented through an all powerful central government.  Tom shows us how Father Abraham, as a young state legislator in Illinois became known as Leaping Lincoln for jumping out of the legislative chamber's window to avoid having to cast a vote on a bill.

Tom shows how Lincoln matured into a United States Representative, who openly expressed white supremacist sentiments, pushed legislation to consolidate power in the hands of the few and ladle out pork chop after pork chop to his political patrons.  But the worst was yet to come.

Tom shows how Lincoln used his mastery of doublespeak to perpetrate an inhumane war against the secessionist south while portraying it as a fight against slavery (while freeing no slaves).  Lincoln is shown to be a mostly an inhumane individual who destroyed the United States system of voluntary association between the states, and went on to break international law by tacitly allowing the burning, looting, and raping of the South and it's women, especially the people of African origin.

On this journey, I was awakened to harsh reality of a brutal man, who is raised up in alabaster white in his memorial, but whose garments are stained with the blood of many.  Particularly shocking to me was Father Abraham’s total crackdown on dissent, which included the suppression of free speech, indefinite detention of his detractors (including newspapers and their editors).  Eventually Lincoln's policies lead to the imprisonment and deportation of a sitting member of the United States House of Representatives, which the following passage documents:

"At 2:30 AM on the morning of May 4, 1863, armed Federal soldiers under the command of General Ambrose Burnside knocked down the doors of the Dayton, Ohio, home of Congressman Clement L. Vallandigham and arrested him without a civil warrant; they then threw him into a military prison in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Congressman Vallandigham was subsequently deported by Lincoln to the Southern states, and he then moved to Canada.

Vallandigham's "crime" was making a speech in response to Lincoln's State of the Union Address in which he criticized the president for his unconstitutional usurpation of power.  For this he was declared a "traitor" by Lincoln and imprisoned without trial.  The Democrats in Ohio (a loyal Union state and home to Generals Grant and Sherman) were so outraged that they nominated Vallandigham for the office of governor even though he had been deported.

In his speech Vallandigham expressed his principled devotion to both the Union and the Constitution, which is why he was so critical of Lincoln.  He made the point that Congress alone had the power to borrow money, and yet Lincoln had usurped that power... [by] the suppression of the press, the suspension of habeas corpus, the blockade of Southern ports, and other dictatorial acts."

I recommend Tom as an excellent guide. He is a guide that will bring you back to the time of The Real Lincoln.  When you return, you will better understand today's world and what is happening in it.  He may even inspire you to take another journey by sidestepping the perils of the Age of Lincoln, many of which are eerie parallels in the Age of Peace under Obama.

 Week 3 on BootsnAll's travel challenge is about studying and learning abroad. Its a braod question that to answer completely would require you to tell you to read my blog, afterall thats what its all about, what travel has taught me, how its effected my life.

Although I will tell you I have been on a couple trips that were more for research than to vacation or to be a tourist in both Washington DC & Israel but I am going to focus on my trip to the United States Holocaust Museum.

This trip may have never been possible without a little educational intuition and I can't imagine who I would be if I hadn't taken my History of Genocide course at UVU. I was given the opportunity along with several other classmates to spend our spring break traveling to Washington DC to research at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. How could drinking on a beach somewhere compare right?

Now doesn't that picture make you feel great about our generation? Wrapped around a conference table, searching and searching for the documentation each of us spent the week looking for to support our final reseach papers due at the end of the semester.

 

Okay, so I am totally going to geek out in this post, but seriously would you take a look at these bookshelves? We actually had to be instructed on how to use them since they move, usually you'd have to crank each different row by hand but these were fairly new and if you weren't careful you'd smoosh someone in them, luckily they also have sensors so you couldn't accidentally hurt someone. 

Room after room, row after row, shelf after shelf and book after book. Magical. For anyone who knows me well I used to work for a paper company and LOVE the smell of freshly printed paper, book stores, and the inside of antique books. weird right? They just have this one of a kind smell and it causes instand happy nostalgia in my brain... good old olfactory system!

Beautiful! The archives of the USHMM aren't seen too often by the public, not that they are overly restricted but it would have never occured to me to ask for a visit to the archives while wandering through the exhibits...

Lucky me, even luckier that I loved the experience!

8 items on my travelers christmas wish list

Over the past few months I’ve been collecting a list of things I’d like to get before I head out into the world. If you have ideas and/or suggestions of what I should pack with me please leave them in the comments!

I found this article on BootsnAll titled Gift Guide: 25 Gift Ideas For Round-the-World Travelers and it had some great ideas, some of which I have, want, or will want.

1) Another external hard drive, one to keep with me & one for my mom to keep with her.

2) Good traveling towel- not necessary but it made the list I had this one found on daily grommet. "It’s the future of towel technology -- soft, super-absorbent, fast-drying, antimicrobial, and space-age compact."A personal alarm/mace device- I’m told I have an overly optimistic idea of people and/or the world so I figure having something like this would help keep the pessimists at bay.

3) I make a conscious effort not to be a germ-a-phob or have any major OCD tendencies; it feels more realistic for the life I want. So this might be a bit much but I still have to admit it’s a pretty cool idea to have an anti-bacterial/anti-fungal toothbrush using nano-silver bristles.

4) SLR camera was on my list, but I've realized I need a photo editing program cause uploading, editing, then saving photos online isn't super convienient so I've got adobe photoshop on my list too.

5) I also would like to read Rolf Potts book Vagabonding. It's going to be one of the books to accomplish my birthday goals!An Electronic reader was mentioned on the list I saw but I much prefer to read on paper, write & take notes in my books and then keep them forever & ever. I like to imagine one day I'll have a library full of my books, kinda like in Beauty & the Beast. (is that weird? Do you have a preference?)

6) Inside my dream library I want to have a really big map of the world on the wall with a ton of little red pins identifying all the places I’ve been. Not too sensible for traveling now but I also found this really cool option where you scratch of the countries where you’ve been.

7) This traveling safe is a pretty nifty idea!

8) There are also lots of magazine subscriptions I would love to have but those will have to wait until the day I have a permanent address again.

I found lots of cool ideas & clever inventions but just like any other marketing demographic gifts for travelers has LOTS of unnecessary items that you really don't need. Much like the billion kitchen gadgets you can buy even though you could be just fine with what you've already got. I can appreciate their existence but the minimalist in me is getting better & better at recognizing unnecessary & excess  purchases.

8 items on my travelers christmas wish list

The International Travel Challenge: Day 9

Day 9 – A favorite foreign movie?

I have been racking my brain trying to think of a foreign movie that I would say is my favorite and I am sorry to say that I drew a complete blank!

I looked up Movieline Magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Foreign Films & I don't know a one of them.

Then... I looked up Blockbuster's list of Top Foreign Movies  & I didn't find a foreign movie I've seen but I did find the title The Shock Doctrine made it on their list which is a book by Naomi Klein that I really enjoyed listening to and now that it is made into a movie I will definitely be renting it soon and then I can write a real post on a foreign movie. To watch the trailer.

editors note: I have since watched this documentary and would highly recommend watching it. Not to support any political views, I think it is good to expose yourself to different ideas, it helps me question, strengthen & discover my own beliefs.

The International Travel Challenge: Day 9

Day 9 – A favorite foreign movie?

I looked up Blockbuster's list of Top Foreign Movies  & I didn't find a foreign movie I've seen but I did find the title The Shock Doctrine made it on their list which is a book by Naomi Klein that I really enjoyed listening to and now that it is made into a movie I will definitely be renting it soon and then I can write a real post on a foreign movie. To watch the trailer.
